Frequently asked questions
What is a Federal Apostille and why do I need one?
A Federal Apostille is an official authentication issued by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. It certifies the signatures of federal officials on documents like FBI Background Checks, IRS Tax Records, and Social Security letters. This allows your U.S. federal documents to be legally recognized in foreign countries that are members of the Hague Convention.
How long does the expedited Federal process take?
The U.S. Department of State's standard mail-in processing currently takes 4 to 8 weeks. Our expedited service uses Registered D.C. Couriers to walk your documents directly into the Office of Authentications. This allows us to complete the process in as little as 14 business days—saving you over a month of waiting.
Can I get a Federal Apostille if I am currently outside the U.S.?
Yes. Since Federal documents like FBI Background Checks are issued as digital PDFs, you can upload your report to our secure portal from anywhere in the world. We handle the printing, the D.C. courier submission, and the international FedEx return to your current location. You do not need to be physically present in the United States.
Does my FBI Background Check need to be notarized?
No. This is a common mistake. Federal documents are authenticated based on the signature of the federal official (e.g., the FBI Section Chief), not a local notary. In fact, adding a local notary seal to an FBI report can often lead to a rejection at the federal level. We process your digital FBI PDF exactly as the Department of State requires.
Which documents require a Federal vs. State Apostille?
Federal Apostille: FBI Reports, IRS Form 6166, Social Security Letters, and Federal Court documents. (These go to Washington, D.C.)
State Apostille: Birth/Death Certificates, Diplomas, and Power of Attorney. (These go to the Secretary of State where the document was issued.)

How are my documents returned to me?
Once our courier picks up your completed Apostille from the Department of State, we send you a high-resolution scan for your records. We then ship the physical original via trackable FedEx to any address worldwide. We offer both domestic and international shipping to ensure your documents arrive safely at their final destination.
